How can I customize the footer layout and content in WordPress?

I’ve been trying to update the footer of my WordPress site to include additional links and a custom copyright notice, but I’m not sure how to make these changes. Should I use a plugin, or is it better to modify the footer.php file directly? Also, is there a way to add different widgets to the footer? Any advice on the best approach for customization would be greatly appreciated!
