    Hi Al,
This probably seems a bit nuts, but I have a design portfolio and I don’t really want it or its images being found in searches anymore.
I just want to send a link to the site to prospective employers but not have anyone else stumbling across it.

Password protecting isn’t an option—have done that previously—as most folk can’t be arsed entering the details.

I spent a hell of a long time SEO optimising the site but I’m happy to strip all that stuff out now. I’ve even removed my name from the site logo.

Hoping someone can help with a plug-in suggestion or something.

    Thanks ??
    John

  • Hi,

What SEO plugin are you using?

Yoast and the likes have option to Allow/disallow certain items from showing in search engines results.

If you have a portfolio post type, you can turn it off from appearing in search results. You can do same even if you’re displaying your portfolio through a post or page.

Alternatively, you can also do that in your robots.txt file.

Let me know the SEO plugin you’re using and I’ll guide you. Cheers!

    Hi there,
Thanks so much for the reply.

I am actually using the portfolio post type! And I just uninstalled Yoast SEO plug-in. I can re0install straight away though. Yes, I’d love to hear your advice on that.

I just switched off pretty much everything that Yoast recommended I switch on.

I’ll try to track down my sitemaps now too, and delete those.

Install the Yoast SEO plugin back.

Go to SEO – Search appearance – content types. Locate the portfolio post type and under the settings, set show portfolio in search result to no, also set show the portfolio archive in search results to no.

The above settings applies to all the portfolio items.
It’s also possible to set certain projects in your portfolio not to appear in search engine results. To do that, edit or while creating a new portfolio, under Yoast settings click on the advance tab and locate Allow search engines to show this Post in search results and set to no.

    Thanks.
When I go in to edit a portfolio post now, there’s now Yoast functionality/options in there to change anymore. I must have disabled it in Yoast’s settings.

Alright. Just leave out the portfolio sitemap.

If you want to go extreme, block Google from indexing the portfolios in your robots.txt. but the Yoast settings is enough since it’ll notify Google not to index the portfolio.

If you want to disable search engines from indexing your site in general, go to settings – readings and under Search engine visibility, turn on Discourage search engines from indexing this site.

If that’s all, kindly mark this topic as resolved. Cheers!

Looks like your message came in while I was typing my previous message.

It looks like you may have turned off some settings in Yoast – General – features.

You don’t need to disable all of Yoast features to achieve what you want, just disable SEO for the portfolio archive. If you don’t want SEO in general, you don’t need Yoast plugin. Just disable site SEO in general – reading.

    Hi There,

Thanks for all your time and help on this. I want to keep my entire site out of search engines, as well as the portfolio posts/pages.

If I disable Yoast, won’t Google and others still index my site—unless I use some sort of robots.txt code to prevent it? And if so, do you have a link to a help page on doing that?

By the way, I didn’t find any sitemaps on my site’s server via FTP. Perhaps when I switched them off with Yoast they were deleted. I believe search engines will still index sites without them though.

    Hi @johnnyivan,

I understand this can be a little confusing at times. Let me clarify.

If you want to disable search engines from indexing your entire site, go to your site Dashboard – Settings – readings and under Search engine visibility, turn on Discourage search engines from indexing this site and click save changes.

That’ll disable search engines from indexing your entire site, including the portfolio archive.

Once you turn on the above settings: deleting sitemap, installing/uninstalling an SEO plugin, using robots.txt, etc. isn’t relevant as search engines won’t be able to index and show your site in search engine results.

If that’s all, kindly mark this topic as resolved. Cheers!

Oh that’s great. I’d no idea it was so simple.

Even if it does say: “It is up to search engines to honour this request.”

I’m giving that a go and will will see how it works. I’ll uninstall Yoast too.

I really appreciate your help and time taken, Sunday.
    John

I am glad I could help. Cheers!
