• I’ve been practising on my site, changing bits of CSS and php here and there to experiment but now I want to start again from scratch to ensure any mistakes I may have made don’t remain in the code and come back to haunt me later.

How do I wipe the slate clean and start again. I’ve tried uploading a new default theme but it just seems to wrap itself round my existing site, which I guess is what it’s supposed to do. I want a complete fresh start. I’m sure there’s an easy answer to this but I can’t find it.

    Many thanks.

  • Is the theme you have been working on called “Default”? If so, rename it to something else. Then upload a fresh copy of the Default theme. If you edited core files (not just the theme), you will need fresh copies too.

I’ve already deleted the old default theme and uploaded a new default theme but when I try to use it, it just wraps itself around my old site so I suppose I must have changed the core files. Would it be easier just to delete the existing wordpress and upload a new one. Or could I just replace some of the core files. the trouble is, I’m not sure which ones I’ve edited.

If you are not sure which core files you have edited, it’s probably best to upload a fresh copy of wordpress. Make sure you keep the wp-config file, and the .htaccess file. Backup the database first too!

Yes, I think I’ll reload it and start again. Thanks for your help.
