How can I show (prev, next) like (1 | 2 | 3 | 4 …) ?

I am not aware of any plug-in that would do this, but notice the form of the URL that corresponds to page 1, 2, and so forth. You could replicate these in the source.

As MySQL has a LIMIT on each page, I am not sure to what extent one could predict the number of pages. It might need a good deal of coding whereby you check how many entries exist in total (or an estimate). As I said, maybe a plug-in exists already, but it’ll slow things down a bit.

There’s a plugin called ‘wp-paginate’

Note that paginate can cause a lot of queries on sites which may cause you problems.
