• Long story short, I’m the new Parish Administrator for our church. At some point, we had a different account through WordPress for our website that was lost (I’m not sure of the story on that). We have a new account on WordPress but somehow, our old account with the same web address is still showing up on Google searches (and occasionally members of our parish that try to pull up the website, but they aren’t sure how they got to it).

I finally got an address provided that brought me to the old website at https://joy-church.org/mission_and_vision.htm but our current website is https://joy-church.org/ (note the same main site)… and I can’t access the “mission and vision” page in our current page list at all.

Is there any way to contact WordPress to have them remove the old account completely where those searches won’t pull up? Or should I create a new page titled “mission and vision” to hopefully overwrite that link? I’m really not sure what I can do about that very old (and now very inaccurate) information.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • mission_and_vision.htm is just the file name of a file that is located in your hosting. If you want to remove it, you would have to log in to your hosting via FTP and delete it. Your hoster’s support can help you with this. WordPress has neither access to this nor the ability to help you.

But it’s not in my hosting… I’ve looked over every page in my list when I’m logged in to the WordPress page and these pages don’t exist there… I can only assume they are linked with the old account that I can’t access.

As I said, this has nothing to do with WordPress. WordPress also only consists of a large number of files that are stored in your hosting area. And the files from the old website are obviously still there. WordPress doesn’t show them to you because WordPress doesn’t work that way anyway.

You should therefore contact your host’s support. WordPress is not your host but “only” the software you use to manage your (new) website.

Fair enough… I assumed that the old account would hold the access to the files (login info and whatnot). So how can I access the site through an FTP? It’s been a couple decades since I’ve used that and I think the software I had in college was defunct years ago. LOL!

I can’t tell you that. You have to ask your hoster. Neither WordPress nor the volunteers here in the forum can help you with this.

Let me ask a different question… what kind of program can I access the FTP through?

Thank you so much! You’ve been a great help. ??
