I’ve never used wordpress and am worried that it is can not be used to create complex sites.
My website idea is essentially a free online advertising platform for small South African, (my country) charities. What follows is a brief (not really) description:

The charities can use the website to:
    Display contact and donating information
    Advertise volunteer positions
    Advertise up-and-coming events

The charities will do this by:
    Creating accounts that will include:
    A Bio
    Volunteering information
    Contact and donating information
    Pictures
    Editing their accounts
Creating advertisements for up-and-coming events with these accounts
Selecting various filters that describe themselves

    Charities will be:
Displayed as list items, including a single picture and brief description, on the ‘Charities’ page
Displayed in full, all the information mentioned above, when clicked on by users

    Events will be:
    Displayed on the home page
    Displayed on the events page

Volunteers/ donators will use the site to:
Search through the various charities using the numerous filters.
Contact the charities directly through the site
Search for up-and-coming events that they can participate in.

    In addition:
News and articles will be displayed on the homepage
There may be some sort of a forum where volunteers can write about their experiences with the charities.

Will I be able to use wordpress to create a site will all the above features?

    short answer: Yes
Longer answer: Yes, with the appropriate plugins.

No I won’t tell you which plugins you will need, you need to search yourself and figure out by yourself.

You can also hire someone to do it for you: https://jobs.wordpress.net/

Going there is cheaper than what I would charge you by the way.

    Good luck with your website.

Definitely can be done in WordPress, doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. Not only would you need a number of plugins to make this work – and possibly some customisation – but you’ll need to enables different kinds of user (charity, volunteer within that charity) to have different levels of access to the website’s facilities.

To do that properly, needs planning carefully. Then like Miroslav said, you probably need to hire someone.

I have no idea how you’d be funding this, but you ought to consider sustainability from the outset. If you’re doing it pro bono, don’t underestimate how much time it will take. I work extensively in the charity sector and think that unless this project is backed by a major organisation, you’ll struggle to promote it and get it used; and if you do manage to make it popular, you’ll need the means to keep it running.

By the way, if you do get it up and running – look up “Google Ad Grants” to help promote it.
