How customable are free themes?

    I’m building my first wordpress site and wanted to know how editable the “free” themes are, for example I have the Alexandria theme installed but cant figure out how to change the image on the home page to my own image and change the wording on the home page and would also like to add a logo to the top left corner.

    Is any of that possible or is this the issue with free themes and if you upgrade to “Pro” or buy a theme they are more customable?
