How do I change the Style Book

  • I tried changing the default button – background and text colour and the radius

    It seems fine but I get ‘ saving failed’ message.

    Is there a way to fix this or an alternative way?

    Hey @normdeplume

    That definitely sounds a little odd – the Global Styles should be able to be saved when making changes via the Style Book.

    This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins and if the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

    If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/
    It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
    On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, <strong>without affecting normal visitors to your site</strong>. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.

    What is a standard WordPress Theme?

    is twenty twenty three?

    All I am trying to do is migrate a site from the contraints of wordpress.com, but I seem to be going around in circles trying themes and plugins that keep interfering and changing the design. Not to mention the peculiarities of the associated editors.

    Apparently the ‘saving failed’ message doesn’t flush so some updates work but not others. Which lead to the mystery how a colours of base, contrast, primary relate to test, link, background etc.!

    I will try getting rid of the plugins that get loaded trying to get other themes to do something useful.

    Hi @normdeplume – in terms of testing – theme’s like Twenty Twenty Three (which you’re already using) and Twenty Twenty Four are the best ones for ruling out a theme conflict.

    Trying with plugins disabled is definitely something good to try – in case they are conflicting. I’d also recommend reaching out to WordPress.com’s support if you’re hosted with them – in case there’s anything specific from their end which could be causing it.

    Just to clarify – if you try using the Style book with a different theme (like Twenty Twenty Four) active – does the same error still occur?

    I can’t imagine a reason for trying to make design changes on a website that I have no intention of using.

    Equally, as the editors vary for the themes it would seem that there may be no exact equivalent for the facility i am having a problem with.

    Be that as it may, I haven’t seen this error with any other theme that I have tried

    I totally understand – the main reason I was suggesting that was just to help narrow down if it is specifically the Twenty Twenty Three theme that was having the trouble (which it looks like you did).

    For what it is worth – with any Block theme (like Twenty Twenty Three or Twenty Twenty Four) the editor will actually be the same – that’s why it’s a good test ??

    So it sounds like it is only happening for you with Twenty Twenty Three, and also still happens when all other plugins are disabled.

    At the moment I can’t recreate this error when testing a fresh site with Twenty Twenty Three – all the style changes I make are saved (including specifically with the Buttons block). Which makes it tricky – it sounds like it may be something specific to your site.

    If you try and make a change to the styles via the Style Book – could you please follow these instructions to see if the browser shows any errors?

    • Firefox, Edge
    • whether SCRIPT_DEBUG fixed the error or not
    • No
    • the JavaScript error??
    • the location of the error – both the file name and the line number??
    • the context of the error – including the whole error stack will help developers??
    • If possible, a link to the web page showing the error??
