• On my website, https://www.lightshieldproductions.com, I have a few different products, and they’re broken down into different categories. My issue is when ever someone clicks on one of the menu options, like the apparel menu, instead of highlighting it, they are taken to a page that displays all of my submenus. Is there a way that I can fix this to have the page linked only display the submenus that are suppose to be under apparel?

  • I’m not clear on the problem. However, you can control the way a category page displays with the drop down at Admin page > WooCommerce > Settings > Products tab > Default Category display.

Basically, my issue is, when you click on the Merchandise tab from my homepage, https://www.lightshieldproductions.com, you are taken here, https://lightshieldproductions.com/apparel/, which is displaying all of my subcategories, most of which aren’t physical merchandise, but are instead digital downloads. There is a separate tab for only digital downloads. I only want my merchandise to display on that page, but I cant figure out how to set that up

WooCommerce comes with a page called “Shop”. It sounds like you have renamed that it to “Apparel”. Presumably, the drop-down at Admin page > WooCommerce > Settings > Products tab, “Product Archive / Shop Page” is set to “Apparel”? That’s OK.

If you set the drop-down at Admin page > WooCommerce > Settings > Products tab, “Shop Page Display” to “Show products”, all your products will show on the Apparel page, but no categories.

Alternatively, if you want your physical products to show on one page, and your digital products on another, you need to setup categories called “physical” and “digital” and go through all your products and assign one or the other of these categories to them. The physical or digital category may be in addition to other categories.

Next, set the drop-down at Admin page > WooCommerce > Settings > Products tab, “Default Category Display” to “Show products”.

Your physical products page url will be at …/product-category/physical/ and digitals at …/product-category/digital/.

That helped me somewhat, but I’m still having the issue. The way I currently have it set up is like this. Home Page>Products(Displays all product categories)>Digital Downloads>*Individual Product Categories(Macros, HDR’s HDRI’s, etc.)*>Products.

I’d like it to be set up where, if click the Products tab instead of using the drop down from that tab, I’m taken to a page that displays the two categories beneath it, which are, Digital Downloads and Merchandise, but instead I’m taken to a page that displays the sub categories from both Digital Downloads and Merchandise.

Then if I use the Products drop down tab, and click Digital Downloads, I’m taken to a page that also displays all of the sub categories from both Digital Downloads and Merchandise, when it should only be displaying my downloadable products.

I apologize if I’m missing something incredibly silly, but I’m pretty new to creating a website and don’t have the cash to have someone else do it for me. Thanks for all the help you can give me!

Its a limitation of the system that a category will display child categories/products and grandchild categories/products etc. Its a point that’s been on here a few times. There’s only so much functionality in the free plugin.

There’s this premium extension which may partially meet your needs:
    https://www.woothemes.com/products/woocommerce-nested-category-layout/

Maybe you could manage without the digital / merchandise category level. Many users don’t like clicking through category levels anyway. A user has to stop and think at each level about which way to go. Users will use the search box on a big site.
