My current site, just a personal blog, is using an old, now obsolete commercial theme. I was thinking of upgrading to Twenty Twenty-Two..

Unlike some of the older Twenty-whatever themes (e.g Twenty Ten) there is no obvious place to set the site banner image, which you can see at my home page.

People here and there are saying this now needs to be done with the “block editor.”

Can somebody point me to directions on how to accomplish this so I can give it a try?

(I’m surprised something as basic as “set banner image” was removed from later themes.)

    Thanks.

Hi @douglerner! Twenty Twenty-Two is a new type of theme – called a block theme – which lets you add elements in any spot you wish, instead of being limited to the editable areas designated by a specific theme. This new method for creating sites is called Full Site Editing (FSE).

A good way to start getting familiar with how to craft a site with Twenty Twenty-Two and FSE is by reviewing this post and the resources it links to:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/support-resource-for-twenty-twenty-two/

To add a banner to the header in Twenty Twenty-Two, you’d edit one of its Header templates, adding a Cover Block or an Image block to it.

If you need further help after exploring the guides I mentioned above, feel free to let me know how I can help!

    Hi Kathryn,

Thanks very much for your reply! It’s the first time somebody answered my question about this in different forums!

I will read up on this. It seems the Twenty Twenty-One theme also uses the new block theme. When did that start? I understand some theme creators are in despair of being able to maintain their existing themes.

Anyway, I will definitely check out the guides and give it a try.

    You’re so welcome!

It seems the Twenty Twenty-One theme also uses the new block theme.

Full Site Editing (FSE) was only introduced in 2022 with WordPress 5.9. Twenty Twenty-One came out before then, so it’s not a block theme, and does not use FSE. Instead, it can be customized in the traditional way, like through options in the Customizer for adding a logo and widgets.

If you need further help with Twenty Twenty-Two, don’t hesitate to ask!

I’ll mark this thread as resolved.

    Hi Kathryn,

Can you clarify just one point?

In Twenty Twenty-One while there is an option to add a logo, the option for the full width top banner image that used to be there in previous themes (e.g. Twenty-Ten which I use at hibikinokai.org) is gone.

So at some point the standard themes just stopped having default banner images?

    Thanks,

    Hi @douglerner,

So at some point the standard themes just stopped having default banner images?

It sounds like you’re referring to the Header Image/Header Media option that is included in some classic (non-block) themes’ Customizer area, right?

The last default theme that had a Header Image/Header Media option was Twenty Seventeen, so it’s a design trend that’s a bit old indeed. ??

OK, thanks. I’m surprised they removed something as basic at a header image. ?? I can’t be the only one confused by that.

Anyway, I’ll give the new block thing-a-ma-jig a try.

Is Twenty Twenty-Two the only theme now in the theme universe to use the block editor method?

    Thanks.

Nope, there are other block themes; you can find the free ones in the www.ads-software.com directory here:

Thanks. I notice some developers have expressed concern about maintaining their current themes that are not block themes now that WordPress has “gone block.” Do you think that is a worry?

I’m probably not the best person to answer this. ?? But I can tell you that block (FSE) themes and non-block themes (also called “classic themes”) are built quite differently. The former uses HTML templates, editable by non-developer users in the Full Site Editor, while the latter uses PHP templates that would be edited in a code editor to make changes. So developers can continue to maintain their classic themes while at the same time, also creating block themes.
