• I am VERY new to www.ads-software.com. I am trying to import files/pages from my current wordpress.com blog to my new www.ads-software.com blog. I get this error message, and as I am VERY green with computers, do not know what steps to take to resolve it:

“Before you can upload your import file, you will need to fix the following error:

Unable to create directory /home/susanche/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/09. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

My .come blog is susanmcelroy.wordpress.com. My new blog is part of my domain, susanchernakmcelroy.com

    Can you help me?

all of these folders need chmod 777 for the import
you can do that with ftp or your host’s file manager
    after doing the import
    chmod back to 755

samboll, you are speaking a foreign language to me. How do I get to my host’s file manager? or ftp?

Can you tell me where to go, step by step?

Also, I am not able to download any free themes. Wow, I’m a mess!

whoops, wrong question. Okay, I can find my way to my control panel, file manager, and to the folders, but I can’t change the number settings. How do I edit them?

Yet another glitch. I can’t get to the folders, because I don’t have a wp-content/uploads. I’ve got wp-content, but no uploads files in there

    /uploads/2009/09
then you will need to manually create those folders in your file manager

samboll, this morning, I went to my control panel, to wp-content, and noticed that to the far right of that bar was the permissions numbers. I changed the number there to 777, and was able to import all my stuff! I’ll go change it back now to 755, correct?

I tell you, when you are not mentally wired for this kind of learning, it is really slooooooooow going. Now, I have to try and figure out how to upload a different theme. Tried last night, but the file would not upload to my desktop. Any suggestions?

yes – go back to 755 for security
    you will learn –

I had the same problem and I found a fix that works for me :

parent directory writable by the server problem

Hope this helps some of you folks.

    Cheers,
