• I’m doing tonnes of SEO work on my site, but in a Google search for my key words, Google shows a post instead of the homepage.
Right now it’s showing an excerpt page which really isn’t good!
I would rather google pulled up my homepage but not sure how to go about this.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    What is your site’s URL?

go to webmastertools and take off all other pages that you don’t want to be indexed

I’ve uninstalled a plugin and it seems to be ok, as in it’s indexing the homepage. But I’m still slipping down through the rankings.

Why wouldn’t you want Google to index all your content? Couldn’t this undermine all that SEO work you’ve been doing?

It’s normal for a lot or even the majority of visitors to arrive on a page that’s not the home page. That’s a good thing, means they’re finding what they searched for. So if Google is listing all your posts and pages, well done!

Reducing the number of posts that Google indexes is very likely to lead to a drop in visits.

Also, it might cause a higher “bounce” rate because people will be arriving on a page that doesn’t so closely match what they searched for.

Imagine you’re a person searching Google for “Cross of Iron”. What would be more useful to you: to arrive on your home page and see dozens of films listed; or to arrive on the page for that specific movie you’re interested in?

(Some websites could have good reasons to do what you’re asking. For example, if the site took people through a series of steps towards a goal and you wanted them to start from home.)

That’s a very good point and well made.
Thanks Jason for taking the time to reply.

I guess I need the home page to show when people type the keyword “Best WW2 Movies”

I haven’t hidden any of my pages yet from being indexed, and my site has moved up 3 pages in the last day so I must be doing something right!!
