• I cannot find anything out on the web about the trick to updating a purchased theme and not losing the theme settings.

If this was a free theme I would simply click on the Update button and WP.org would update the file, and all the theme settings would be in place.

I am using Remal theme purchased from Themeforest. (Great theme!) I did not make a child theme because I have been able to do all the customization I have needed from the theme settings page.

Now there is an update. I downloaded it from the Themeforest/Remal site.

When I go to Dashboard/Appearance/Themes/Install Themes/Upload and try to upload a zip file the upload fails because there is already a folder named Remal in the Themes folder in my Cpanel.

Yes, I could change the name of the original theme’s folder and upload the new theme into a new folder named Remal. But then I will be starting from scratch.

What am I missing here? How do I update a purchased theme?

  • Hi,
premium themes are not supported on wp.org, usually you should ask for help the seller of the theme but this question is good for free themes downloaded from 3rd parties and not from wp.org so what I would do is using ftp overwrite the themes files(you can make a backup of the original files first in case any desaster happens-but normally you should be fine).

How do I install an UPDATE for a purchased theme?

The easiest way to find out is ask the vendor you made the purchase for. The FTP method jnhghy will work but many commercial themes provide a “Click here to upgrade” button.
