    Hi,

I have been asked to install a plugin on a wordpress site that is new to my administration. When I logged into the site there is not a place to add a new plugin.

I have no experience with multisite, but I do know that in a WordPress multisite there is no ability to add a plugin because it has to be done at a more central ‘super’ administration level. There is also no ability for me to look at and edit the php files through the standard dashboard.

Sooo, my question is, without looking ill informed to my client, how can I tell if the site is a WordPress multisite, when all I have is the local site admin login.

    Thanks,
    Janey

  • Hi Janey

it’s quite simple, when you run a WP MU site, you have a central Network Admin Dashboard which you can access via

    https://your-domain.com/network/wp-admin

Your individual site admin Dashboard will be accessed via:

    https://your-domain.com/wp-admin

The ‘network’ dashboard requires super-admin privileges. It is where you will see the plugin installation page as well as the theme installation page and other network-wide settings. Each plugin you have the option to activate ‘Network wide’ in which case the plugin is active by default for any site.

In the site Dashboard you can activate plugins which have not been activated network-wide.

    Hi Janey,

The first thing I’d do is confirm the account information you were given is an admin account by checking “users”. Assuming it is…

Sounds like you could well have a multi-site install. In my 4.0 installations, when I look at the top left corner on a multisite installation, even if I am an admin for a subsite and not a super-admin, I see “My Sites” with a list of sites underneath.

If I access a non-multi site as admin, I see the site title and underneath “visit site”. It’s possible to change what capabilities roles have, so it’s at least possible someone could have coded the site to do this, but I can’t imagine why they’d cripple admin like that…I’m guessing it’s multi-site.

If it is, you can’t fix it locally. Whoever is hosting it has to either add the plug-in for you to turn on and configure, or make you a super-admin (unlikely). I don’t know of any workaround.

Thanks all for your advice. It is much appreciated. I will follow through with your suggestions and hopefully resolve the issue.
