All of the documentation I can find relates to how to login TO the admin panel. BUT there are two panels. The one I need has extra menu items like “Add-Ons” and can only be seen when I am logged in AS administrator (key word, “AS”).

My problem: I have lost my Administrator login name and password. I have searched my database but cannot find it. Again, let me be clear…I can login to the Admin panel all day long. What I need to do is log in AS Administrator to see the expanded panel.

Can anyone point me to where I can retrieve this login info?

    Thanks

    Phil

  • Hey Phil,

Do you have the email address associated with the admin user? If so, just click on “Lost Password” and have the password reset that way! If not, you can go to the wp_users table in Database to edit the password using MD5 encryption:

Thanks Mike. That looks like the documentation I referred to in my question. I can log in fine…what I cannot do is log in AS admin, which unlocks an expanded menu. I still cannot find any documentation on that. Short of doing a new install of WordPress, there has to be something available out there.

    Phil,

This is because you aren’t logging in with the correct username. It is obvious that you have more than one username on this install and the username you are using to log in is not the admin username.

You must log in with the Admin’s username. There is nothing special at all to do in order to log in “AS” an admin. A user role is all based upon the actual username that you use to log in with. So, if you are logging into wp-admin just fine but not with admin rights, then you are not logging in with the correct username

If you look into the wp_users table, you will most likely find the correct username to log in with.

What you are saying makes perfect sense, however after double-checking, I am logging in with the user name listed in “users” as the administrator, yet the expanded menu does not appear.

OK we are getting somewhere. Please let me know what “expanded” menu items you are looking for. What options etc? Thanks!

I use “X The Theme” which has an auto-update feature. I need it badly since a bunch of real cool functionality went away with WordPress 4.1. In order to enable the auto-update on X, I need to log in AS admin and just under the “Dashboard” item in the menu should appear the “Add-On” menu item. It’ll make my day if I can make that appear.

    Hey Phil

OK, great thanks! This is going to be a theme issue and not a log in as admin issue. I can assure you that if you are the only user on your site and your username has been able to see these things before, then you are logged in as admin now.

The theme may have issues with 4.1 because it only lists 4.0 as being compatible as you can see:

    https://themeforest.net/item/x-the-theme/5871901

I would recommend reaching out directly to the theme developer to find out what happened to this menu item. Good luck!

    Thanks
Just for grins…Here’s a link to an image of the menu: https://theme.co/media/x_support/kb-product-validation-7.png

Just for grins, have you tried deactivating ALL plugins to see if this menu item reappears? ?? It could be a simple plugin conflict. If that doesn’t do it , definitely reach out to them and see what they say.

Tried it. No change. Resorting to an old fashioned theme update…ftp drag and drop/overwrite, etc. Should know in a moment if everything updates properly and everyone plays nice in the 4.1 environment.

Awesome, that is a good idea!!

Success. And the Add-Ons menu item has appeared. Thanks for talking me off the cliff.

Yay, that is great to hear! Themes can be problematic when there are WordPress updates. But glad to hear doing the update in FTP did the trick. Have a great night
