• I’ve got WP 3.01 network running on https://www.best-dog-advice.com; I can create a sub-site in the System Admin panel, and edit its options. I added a second theme, “white as milk”, which is enabled in the Network Themes section. However, when I edit the sub-site’s options, only TwentyTen theme is enabled, the “white as milk” does not appear as an option. I entered that theme name in the Template and Stylesheet fields but still that theme is not listed as being available.

    What am I doing wrong?

Also, I was expecting to see a directory created with the sub-site’s name, but there isn’t one. Is that normal?

Finally, I read somewhere that plugins must be placed in a directory called “mu-plugins”, under wp-content, for use by all sub-sites, but the plugins I have copied there are not showing up in the sub-site’s plugins list. However, the one plugin that I copied into the “plugins” directory does show up. I’m obviously not understanding something. Can you help?

  • Super admin -> themes, there you can network activate the theme
Dashboard -> my sites, there you can choose the dashboard of the site you want to work on. Each site gets its own dashboard.
There no longer is a MU plugins directory. You can just use the Plugins -> add new function and ‘network activate’ a plugin if you want to use it sitewide. And the same as with the themes, you can give other users the rights to see plugins or not.

There no longer is a MU plugins directory.

There no longer is a MU plugins directory included by default. It is still used, still supported, and has even been available in single WordPress since 2.7.

And you will even see what’s install in the mu-plugins folder now, in a tab under Plugins called “must use”.

Do not put every plugin in there. Just put plugins in there that specifically state to do so, as they do not require activation. Also, they must be the files themselves, not the folders.

    Themes:

theme must be network enabled (not activated) to show in the appearance menu for the other sites. Go to Super admin -Them to enable theme network wide. you will still have to activate the them on that site. It is best practice to actually go to the backend of that site and activate the theme there, not tinker with the edit menu. ??

Completely normal. the blogs are virtual. The only blog-specific folders created are ones for uploads, and those are done by blog ID# not name.
