• Hello all!

    Hope everyone had great holidays!

I’ve been trying to build a static site using Chunk at https://www.shainblum.com (hi Kathryn!!), but I’m very confused about how the “Home” page is handled in this theme.

“Home” automatically appears in the menu and seems to exist by default as an editable page, but when I attempt to customize the theme and set “Home” as the default static homepage, it doesn’t appear in the dropdown list and can’t be selected. And if I try to create my own “Home” page, I’m forced to call it “home-2” in the URL and end up with two Homes in the menu.

Is “Home” the static homepage by default? Or is there something special I need to do to force it to become the static homepage?

    Thanks much!

    Mark S.

  • Hi, Mark! ??

The “Home” item in your menu just points to the URL https://www.shainblum.com – it doesn’t mean you’ve actually created a static homepage yet.

If you’ve already created a page that you want to use as your homepage – say, your “Welcome” page – you just need to assign it as your homepage under Settings > Reading. Click the “A static page” button, and then select your Welcome page from the dropdown menu next to Front page.

If you’ll also have a blog, you’ll need to create a placeholder page for that as well.

    – Create a page
    – Title it “Blog” (or whatever you like)
    – Leave the post content empty as this is just a placeholder
    – Save the page
    – Under Settings > Reading, select your new blog page from the dropdown menu next to “Posts page.”

There’s also a guide here to creating a static homepage. It’s from WordPress.com, but it works the same on self-hosted sites.

Let me know how it goes!

    Hey Kathryn!

“Happiness Engineer.” What a wonderful title! The closest I ever came to something similar was when I was officially “Atomic Brain” at Airborne Entertainment. But “Happiness Engineer” is so much more descriptive. And nice.

Thanks so much for the help with Chunk. I think I’ve pretty much done what you’ve laid out so far, but I still have a couple of issues:

1- If I set up “Welcome” as the static homepage, how do I remove “Home” from the nav menu? It still seems to appear no matter which page is set as the static homepage and still takes the user to the root web URL, even if another page is set as the static homepage.

2- Presuming I can remove the default “Home” from the nav menu, if I want to use a page called “Home” as the static homepage, can I create a “../home-2” (or whatever) safely? Would this cause any problems?

3- An unrelated question: How do I remove the “Meta” field from all the pages on the site?

Thanks so much again! And all the best for a happy new year!

Whoops! Sorry, skip question 1 above. I just remembered how to remove the default “Home” from the nav menu.

Hi there! Yes, it’s a neat title, huh? ??

I think I’ve pretty much done what you’ve laid out so far

Hmm – is this the site we’re talking about? https://www.shainblum.com/

Right now it looks like your homepage is still set to your latest posts, and not to a static page.

Would it be possible for you to take a screenshot of your front-page settings under Settings > Reading so I can take a look?

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot – in a graphic format like JPG, PNG, or PDF – in your Media Library, and provide a link so I can see it, or upload it with a service like Droplr or Imgur.

if I want to use a page called “Home” as the static homepage, can I create a “../home-2” (or whatever) safely? Would this cause any problems?

It won’t cause problems, but usually this is only necessary if you already have a page with the same slug (slug is the part after the slash). If you don’t need the original “/home/” page anymore, you can put it in the Trash and then you should be able to reuse the slug /home/.

3- An unrelated question: How do I remove the “Meta” field from all the pages on the site?

Mind starting a new thread for that one since it is unrelated, and give me some more details about what you mean exactly, cause I’m not sure. ?? Thanks!
