how do i use supersized with a shuttershot child theme?

I am trying to figure out how to get Shuttershot to work with the child theme i created. I am not sure what i am doing wrong (im fairly new to the whole php, html, css thing). I am trying to add photos to the homepage slider but for some reason the slides dont show on my homepage once they are added to the slide. ive read that in order to have files from the parent directory load, duplicated or overwritten in the child theme i must create a folder with an identical name. i created a supersized.css file as well as a functions.php file (which are both empty because im not sure what to put in them). I do not know what else to do at this point and there are very few help forums for this theme. any help would be greatly appreciated

also, if someone could shed some light on child themes and how to customize or style them youd be my savior i can catch on once i get the basics but i just dont understand where to begin with the child theme
