Can you please expand a bit on how to fix it with Custom CSS?

Wouldn’t this affect all images, so portrait pictures would be fine but landscape pictures would be very small?

I would recommend the following custom CSS plugin:
https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/simple-custom-css/

This will only affect archive images and make them appear the actual size they are uploaded.
