How do you delete wp-admin & wp-includes files?

    In ftp I can’t delete the files (wp-admin & wp-includes), nor can I open file and delete the entire contents – says can’t delete directory files.

    Can I delete these files from the file manager?

    What is shell access?

    Help, trying to update a really old site 2.5.1
