How do you put the Category Title in a custom template

I have gone through the documentation and have reviewed both: https://publishpress.com/knowledge-base/author-boxes-theme-templates/ and https://publishpress.com/knowledge-base/custom-template-for-author-category-boxes/. But I don’t see anywhere in the documentation, where I can put the category like “written by” and “Reviewed by” in the actual template. I tried something like $author->category with no luck.
Basically, I want authors of the post to have either “written by”,”edited by”, and “reviewed by” depending on what category they are in.
I see where it can inject automatically before or after the author title, but I don’t see where I can control it’s placement by coding it into the custom theme. Can someone please give me some insight?
