How do you set up a WordPress retail site

  • I would like to create a WordPress blog using the content of a website I created over 2 years ago that is currently online. Can someone help answer the following questions?

    1) Can I move my current website domain name to WordPress when I create my new blog account? If so, how do I do that?

    2) Would anything prevent me from using my current website’s content to create pages (not posts) for the blog. Once I have the page content on the new blog built, the old website would be taken offline and discontinued.

    3) In the Codex I read the following: “Content is the raison d’être for any web site. Retail sites feature a catalog of products.” From that statement I’m assuming that a WordPress blog can be a retail site, but I find no information on how to create it. The retail aspect I plan will be for dropped shipped products which entail having a shopping cart, etc. If such a possibility exists for a WordPress blog, where can I find out more about it?

    1. are you asking if you can move to wordpress.com and move your content? then yes, you can. You can purchase domain redirect for $15/yr (I believe). I believe WP dot com has a page to allow you to directly import any blog type.

    2. sorry I don’t get what you are asking.

    3. Well a WP site should be PART of a retail site. HOwever you can sell directly from the WP posts or pages.

    Thanks, Mark for trying to figure out what I’m asking. Actually, I don’t want to move the content intact. However, I understood that static pages (vs. posts) are possible. I was going to use the content of my current website to build static pages.

    I guess what I really need to know is if a shopping cart can be added to a WordPress blog. If you are saying that selling directly from the WP posts or pages can be done through a shopping cart that is answering my question. However, I suspect that what you mean is the pages and posts can be used to promote a product and offer a link to a website where they can actually buy the product. If this understanding is correct, let me know.

    Sorry I can’t make myself more clear … it is difficult when I lack so much knowledge about how WordPress works. I’m trying to get up to speed so I’ll go back to the drawing board before asking more questions if I’ve managed to confuse you further.

    There are shopping carts for wordpress – many folks use wordpress as a retail CMS.

    Samboll, your information is very helpful. Thanks. I will check out the shopping cart, but am beginning to suspect that building an estore in WordPress offers more challenges than my abilities can cope with. Instead of using WordPress I’ll probably be foreced to rebuild my website with the program I am already using for another website.
