How does a brand new blog get a spammer visit?

I know a guy that created a brand new blog with WP and within a day or two he was hit by a link spammer.

His old site was all php and html created by himself but he decided to try WP. He never had spam on his old site. So, how did they find him once he switched over?

The only thing I can think of is that they do a google on WordPress and find the blogs that have the WordPress credits in the footer.

I’m not suggesting this because I think credit should be given where due, but if a person took the WP credits out, would that decrease and maybe even stop the spammers?
