How does WP.org theme repo rank it’s themes?

    Moved to Everything Else WordPress as this isn’t a request or feedback.

    I’m 99.444% sure it’s based on download and active installation count. I don’t think reviews (which are feedback and when people try to manipulate them, I find them and have a field day…) count much in that ranking.

    If reviews DID count much then even more people would be spamming the reviews.

    more info would be very much appreciated as I had this question in my head for a long time as well.

    I’m quite sure that download and install count can be manipulated as well – for a developer or server guy it wouldn’t take too much to setup a script that installs wp instances and activates a specific theme – not like I want to give ideas for cheating the system:)

    To be honest a rating/review based system combined with active install metrics taken into account can probably create the fairest system for all.

    Download count is not as easily manipulated as you think, and if you try to manipulate the install count, then that will simply get you and your themes banned from the site. It’s been attempted, and those responsible have been banned for it when I found them doing it. ??

    It’s basically install count combined with age of the theme. There’s a few other factors, but that’s the gist of it. It’s a “popularity” thing, not a raw numbers thing.
