How does wp_link_pages( ) works ?

    Currently I’ve wordpress 2.9.1 installed in my system. How can I check the functioning of wp_link_pages( )..as it works on page.php and single.php in default theme ?
    ( with next_post_link & previous_post_link I’ve no probs)
