    HELP!
Saw a theme I want to purchase https://www.templatemonster.com/demo/36334.html
My goal is to completely change the colours, images, wall paper etc.
I was told that this theme would need something called “Template Tuning” in order to fully customize this. Why could I not go into the CSS and make changes like I have in Twenty Ten?

So my question is…. can I take the Twenty Ten template – customize it through the CSS so it would look somewhat like this “36334” template?

Is there no limit to Twenty Ten if one knows html coding?

    Thanks for all wise info!
    Marie

  • Template Tuning looks like it’s their theme customization service. So they are just trying to get more money out of you.

There is no reason why you can’t make the modifications yourself.

In theory you can take any theme as a base and customize it into anything you like really. It just depends on how much skill and time you have.

    wow thanks for this information.
Does this mean I can add a slider (images move sideways to show other images)
    to Twenty Ten also?

    As an example…

One site that I’ve done using twentyeleven as a base, with a child theme to make it into what I watned it to be.

As you can see, there’s a LOT done. This is not jsut CSS, but a lot of work with templates, custom post types and a few other tricks thrown in there.

oh, a quick question for you?
so why would someone buy an expensive theme template? when you can do all this stuff in Twenty Ten

That’s very simple. That website cost a LOT more then a simple template would have cost. Add that to most people either not knowing how to do those sort of changes or not being able to afford something that full-blown, a theme is a good mid-way point that can give you a bit of originality without needing to spend countless hours learning or paying someone else to do it for you. Overall the cost of a template is only a very small fraction of something that scale.

michael.mariart is correct. Creating your own custom theme from Twenty Ten can be a lot of work. So if you don’t have the skills or time to create your own custom theme a commercial theme can be a good option if you want something a bit more unique with the layout and features they need for a relatively cheap price. The other attraction of buying commercial themes from good vendors is the support provided.
