• Twenty fiften, seventeen, sixteen. They always need updating. Why are they there, and can I get rid of them/ clutter?

  • Yes, you can delete them. They are there so you can use them if/when problems arise to help debug. If you are not using them you can delete them though as they can always be reinstalled through the repository.

There are a couple ways to delete them.. probably the easiest would be to go into wp-admin under Appearance >> Themes and click on each one individually then when the modal window pops up click the delete link/button at the bottom right.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks how do they help debug. would you keep them? I’ve never used them.

If you run into a problem and need to debug you will be advised to switch back to them. The themes themselves are known working themes so if a problem arises it helps to determine if your theme is causing the problem or if a plugins or some other code that you may have added to the site is causing the problem. I’ve been developing WordPress sites for ten years and I typically do not keep them installed on any of the live sites I manage.

Thanks, ok so you deleted them? and have never needed them, and if you did you could easily install them? Just clutter to you too?

I have needed them to debug from time to time… but I always remove them once debugging is completed. It’s actually most secure to not have them on the server if you are not using them. You can re-install them at any time in the same screen under Appearance >> Themes by clicking the “Add new” link at the top left next to the title.

Thanks, interesting. For plug ins do you always delete those you don’t actively use or keep them inactive but there?

Generally, I do not keep any code that is not being used by the site hanging around. There are exceptions to this rule but not many… if I have plugins that are used more than once a month for administration purposes that make the administration panel slow when activated I will deactivate (but not delete) them unless they are being used. As an example on one site I manage we use one of the duplicate post plugins two to three times a week (i don’t know which one off the top of my head) and for some odd reason it creates slowness within the admin area so we keep it deactivated unless we need to duplicate posts.
