I haven’t used NextGen, but there is probably a fixed width and height for images in css (for example they are set to 50px) so it is always displaying that width, what you need to do here is to override the plugins css. You should set the width to % instead of px and height depending on your needs.

Instead of trying to amend the plugin’s CSS (which will only be overwritten next time the plugin is updated), try asking for assistance in NextGen’s dedicated support forum: https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/nextgen-gallery

I imagine they will also be keen to ensure that the plugin’s output is responsive,.
