Shorten page permalinks (How?)

I’m running WP 2.3.3 and I can’t upgrade yet (because of a plugin who wont work if I upgrade). So, is there a way to change permalinks like this: https://wordpress-blog.com/somepage instead of https://wordpress-blog.com/?page_id=ID ? Appreciating comments!
