    Hi Folks,

I am suffering high server load averages and cannot yet pinpoint the cause(s).

However, when a warning message is received, I always note that my IP has multiple connection established.

Last night with 2x WP Admin browser tabs open – one for edit – one for the published post – I saw that the server was recording 12 established connections from me at that moment.

I can’t find documentation on this as to what the norm is.

Can you tell me, in Admin, with one WP edit tab open in a browser, how many connections may that make to the server?

    Regards and thanks,
    Angus

The Gutenberg editor uses the REST API for many things, so it could potentially hit the server several times per second, each connection lasting a random amount of time. If a particular query is being slow it can take several or more seconds.

Are you seeing it only when using Gutenberg, or all the time?

    Hi Topher,

    Thanks for that reply.

I am a WP user and not a developer and my site has constantly high server load averages and our server free swap memory has been zero for months now.

If I am working on Admin when I get a server warning message the Five Minutes Average >10, even with only 2x tabs open – one with the edit page and one on say the newly published post – I will find the “Connection counts” for my IP is 15.

I use a VPS and have all rights to the server, but I lack the technical knowledge to interrogate the server for more information, and even with such diagnostic data, don’t have the skill set to interpret it ??

The WP troubleshooting/ analysis/ monitoring plugins I can can find are not pointing to any issues as to which script is causing the issues, and I can’t find one to monitor the server as needed. I’m really not wanting to or capable of setting up a console for the server as my ignorance could kill the site ??

Also, FYI, as we have no free memory ever and a fully loaded cpu all the time, all the monitoring plugins use a lot of resources and after a while, start to contribute to the site problems…

So my questions was to try to get a handle on how much influence 1x edit page should have, as I think 7-8 server connections per active Admin tab, is not normal.

I am working with the author of 1 plugin which probably causes or contributes to our situation, but they are struggling to find the source of the problem.

I started this site in 2010 and WP was very simple then. Now I can barely cope with the issues that arise as a result of all the updates and the effects they have on legacy sites, as well as the wider eco-system of social media, phone screens etc. etc. ??

    But, we’ll keep going ??

Thanks for your information. I’ll mull that over and see if I can get some insight as to where to look for our script error(s).

Oh and finally, I use Classic Editor and Advanced Editor Tools and will never transition to Blocks… I just can’t get my mind around how they work and how to work with them. I use copy and paste and it is so simple and fast….

I also manage several WordPress.com site for authors – just do the posting for them – and I’m almost to the point that it is just getting too hard to bypass Blocks there, and paste in code. It seems each time I go there, it’s getting harder and harder to find the code editor….

    Regards and thanks,
    Angus
