• I deleted a theme that got corrupted while was editing the stylesheet, then reinstalled a fresh, untouched copy (from the zip file), but WordPress is still using the old broken version.

Two hours have now passed since the old version was deleted but WP is still using it.

My question is, how long is it going to take for WP to stop using the old file?

Please note, I did not simply change to another theme, I also deleted the theme entirely from my account.

I know for a fact the theme file I uploaded from my hard drive is 100% clean because I created a completely brand new blog in another subdomain, installed the same theme from the same zip file, and it is fine.

  • Unless there is caching on your site or server, changes should be immediately apparent. If you have a caching plugin, try clearing it. If you host uses server-side caching, find out how to clear that.

    Also, clear your browser cache.

I spent an hour and a quarter on the phone with the hosting service (so they’ll be losing money on me for the next 6 months!) and they said they’d never seen anything like it. They wiped the cache clean, moved things around, removed all the posts and all the themes, then imported ‘clean’ posts and themes from another blog.. you name it. Still the problem returned after reinstalling the theme in question.

The problem occurred only in IE, Firefox and Opera. Chrome would refresh the page properly. This held true both for me at home and for the hosting service help desk. – and like I said, not for another blog with identical posts, theme and settings.

Whatever it was, was buried deep within WP or the servers and for all practical purposes the damage was irreversible. So I had to delete the corrupt blog entirely then re-create it.
