How much can WordPress take?

  • I love WordPress, and use it for several sites. Actually I love it so much that I’m thinking of converting my flagship site. But it’s pretty big and can WordPress take it?

    How much can WordPress take in terms of visitors and database stress?

    (Please note that bandwith and space doesn’t concern me, I have servers n’ stuff that’ll do just fine.)

  • WordPress itself isn’t limited. The only factors that will affect you are server power and such.

    There are WordPress installs out there with tens of thousands of entries and sites that get tens of thousands of users a day.

    Go for it.

    WordPress is currently serving as the backbone for many high-traffic blogs, such as:

    There are plenty more where that came from, and I’m sure that there are many with even higher traffic rankings.

    Basically, WordPress will take a beating without spiking your server’s resources. But, like every other PHP/MySQL-based publish platform out there (and almost every website for that matter), it won’t survive a heavy Slashdotting without some assistance. In most cases of reported high load, the server actually tends to be the weak link, not WordPress.

    If you do notice your server load being spike by heavy WordPress traffic, I highly recommend that you use WP-Cache to serve your content as cached static pages, rather than dynamically generated content.

    I personally doubt you’ll need the caching plugin unless you’re getting like 100k+ hits a day. Anything less, it’s not gonna freak out your server.
