How much customization possible?

  • Hello,

    I have been a graphic designer and web designer for almost 20 years. I know HTML, CSS, etc., but am just getting into the WordPress world.

    I am under the gun to get a WordPress web site up and running for a client. I am hoping to work on graphics with her while simultaneously teaching myself themes, templates and anything else needed here.

    How customizable is WordPress? If I show a client static web layouts, like usual, will I be able to convert just about anything that I can design to a WordPress site, or are there limitations that I should read up on to make sure that I don’t design anything that I can’t deliver?

    Thank you for your response. I tried to read up on these forums and other WordPress resources. It looks like PHP knowledge is required. Is that something that someone who knows HTML and CSS could teach themselves easily – the amount required for this, anyway?

    I learned how to code entirely on my own, I have a degree in counseling but easy is relative. I took a few years to learn everything. I struggled often but stuck with it because I was really interested.

    Ask questions here and get to know the WordPress template tags.

    I made a customised WordPress theme for my own blog (still under construction, but you can see it here: https://terraavocado.com/) and initially tried to do it from the ground up using various WordPress and PHP (and CSS3) resources across the web, but found it too slow going and frustrating (I am not a mathematics/logic student by a long shot), so I stopped and found a stripped-back theme that I then bashed around for a while until it did what I wanted. There seem to be quite a few themes that are intended for this kind of approach, Toolbox is the one I used.

    Thank you both very much. Sounds like I need to hire someone for the short term, but starting learning as fast as I can. ??
