It looks like at least in my case, PHP memory limit matters.
I have many functions not working properly on my production server, including uploading images, inserting gallery inside post, importing images and more.

I copied all installation to another server with higher PHP memory limit (256MB) and all works like a charm.

Because I need to pay more for more PHP memory so I would be happy to know how much more I really need, then simply struggling to get maximum.

How much do I really need? or How much more do I need on the top of all the rest installed?

@tom – We recommend at least 128MB but some installations (as you are finding) require more … it is rare that a limit of 256MB will be exceeded so we almost always recommend that as a default.

I have seen NextGEN Gallery work on site with only 64MB as well, so there are definitely no guaranteed limits but, as noted, 256MB has not failed to the best of my recollections.

Also to note, many “shared” hosting services offer a standard limit of 256MB, it might be worth investigating a new host if the cost is actually prohibitive to have a server environment that can handle a WordPress installation.

    Thanks!

    Currently I run on 96MB.
Correct me if I’m wrong. It mainly depends on how much memory other plugins use, doesn’t it?
Maybe I should revise plugins I have active now or replace them with less memory consuming ones?

@tom – There are a great many factors involved but essentially it revolves around the active plugins and the memory that they use both at “rest” and when “in-use” as the case may be.
