• I’m new to WordPress, and I’m enjoying my blog site. However, someone else set it up for me and I’m just a computer “user.” I’m wondering about one thing: Do we have to be concerned about “space” on our site? In other words, if we use lots of graphics will we run out of “space”?

  • well, depending on your definitin of lots, it could be a concern.

your hosting plan should make it very clear how much space you have available to you. WordPress doesn’t require very much at all, and neither do the small pics you’re using, but that doesn’t mean anything without having some idea of how much is available to you.

the best way to look at this is to work out how long you’ve been blogging, and then see how much space all the pictures you’ve currently posted are taking up. If you have them on your hard drive, this’ll be relatively easy.

from that you can work out how long you can keep blogging at your current rate of consumption until you run out of whatever’s been allocated for you.

… or we can give you a comfort estimate based on your hosting plan details. (I mean the breakdown of what you get, don’t do something like post your whole welcome email with your password or anything).

Hi there, theres really no need to run out of space these days.
Yes. Graphics can use a lot of resources. But with so many graphic types to choose from, its fairly easy to keep sizes down. If you’re using graphic or image software, read the help files, there will be loads of info on saving to the best format.
.jpg and .gif to mention just two.
Glad you’re enjoying your blog site.
    good luck. mike.

I hate to show how little I know, but: Where do I find my “hosting plan details”?

Also, I’m using images from Yahoo and Google. I usually resize them to make them smaller. I’m assuming that means they use less resources than when they were bigger. Am I right? I know it’s not much of a difference. Just curious.

If you can log in to your hosting companies web site, you should be able to find out what plan you are on. This\could be anything from 100mb upwards.
You should also have an account with them that you can log into, which should give details about the storage you are currently using.
unfortunately, simply resizing mages physicaly doesn’t always bring the file size down.Computers have a tendency to simply throw pixels away at random and this just leads to loss of image quality.
Just about all image editors now allow excellent levels of compression on, for example .jpg files.
A bit of practice is all it takes, so keep going.
    regards. mike

Thanks for the input. Very helpful!

well, your host’s website would be a good place to start. I mean, you have an account at host x… you signed up for it, presumably, so you should be able to find the amount you’re paying on a list of all the plans they have on offer.

that’ll tell you how much space you have available.

you can burn a hundred megabytes pretty easily, but I can think of a number of cases where you might have even less than that available, so it does pay to find out.

chances are you’re going to be very comfortable, but that’s no reason not to know for sure.

Thanks, Ivovic. I’ll check. I’m debating about loading something that might use up space, so I need to find out. Thanks for your help.
