How to add horizontal menu to a theme?

I currently use the Black Board 1.1.1 theme by Frank Schrijvers. It has vertical menu.
I’m just wondering if its possible to get rid of the ‘archive’ and ‘category’ to make way for a horizontal menu? a friend said it’s really difficult, and since I’m relatively new to wordpress, I do not know how to do so.
