Are you using year and month folder options? Having many files in one folder, especially large ones, can slow this down – additionally, optimize images prior to upload.

That is often true but there are very many factors that come into play when using server callback functions and large uploads, so I am sure that both are not tied in this case. I find the media upload feature in WP3.3.1 to be fast and intuitive…

Of course, one can upload tons of images at once with an f t p client…one need not use the media gallery/library to display images.
