How to add line breaks in product short description

How can I allow line breaks in the short description of products? Right now, the short description runs together as one paragraph regardless of formatting. Paragraph and line break tags do not work, neither do the standard 1-line and 2-line breaks in the visual editor. I suspect that wpautop is disabled, but I can’t find how to enable it.
