• We are using the Twenty Ten theme.

Each time we create a new page, the name of the page is automatically added to the navigational links that display across the top of the page. Or — if we state that a page is the “child” of another page, then it shows up when you hover over that main page’s link. For the most part, this is fine, but….

What if we want neither of the above? We no longer want the subpages to display when hovering over the main page link, nor do we want the page displayed front and center within the main navigational menu. We just want to be able to create new pages and NOT have their names displayed anywhere. We will simply be linking to them from within other pages or articles. They do not require being in the list of pages and links and menus. Does this make sense?

I tried creating a “custom menu”, then went into widgets and dragged “custom menu” into the primary widget area. So far, nothing has happened. I’m not seeing this “custom menu” and our navigation links are still listing all our pages – which of course looks goofy.

What am I missing here? We want to be able to create new pages, but do not need those pages to be displayed in the navigational links.

    Thanks!

  • Start by creating a custom menu: Appearance_Menus_SubPanel

I did that already. I created a custom menu, added the pages I wanted in there, arranged them into proper order and saved it.

Then I went to widgets and dragged this custom menu into the “primary widget” location.

So far, I still don’t see this custom menu. I’ll go read that page you posted more carefully. Thanks!

Did you select your new menu in the custom menu widget?

Uh, I think so. I dragged it into the ‘primary widget’ area, and from there, I selected it, then clicked save. Was there something else I should have done?

I think I got it now! I needed to select this custom menu, not from the widget thing, but from the top left of the “menus” page.

    Thank you!

Yep – that’s the Right Way To Do It in the Twenty Ten theme. Glad you managed to get it sorted. ??

One more question — with this new custom menu in place, can we still add subpages that will show up when you hover over a main page’s link in the navigation menu if need be?

I’m asking because I just created a new page, and specified it to be subpage for another one, and it is not showing the drop down thing in the menu, as it used to do.

can we still add subpages that will show up when you hover over a main page’s link in the navigation menu if need be?

Yes. To maintain the tightest control, I’d suggest that you add the new sub-pages manually to your custom menu via Appearance -> Menus rather than letting WP add them as/when they are created. Just remember to re-save the menu each time you make a change.

Ah ha, I see – I dragged the sub-page onto the primary page, which made it appear in as a drop down thing — anyway, it’s working, Yay.
