    Hi,

Can I please have some basic advice on theme twentytwentythree, I use a corresponding child theme now.

I haven’t understood how to include menus. There is no admin-panel entry for widgets. At the top right corner in the block editor for the home and single pages it says “Page list: Could not retreive pages”

I have used WP for over 5 years, including php, developing plugins and child themes, but I am not so used to modifying themes and I have not yet become familiar with the block editor.

How can I easily just make a menu with links that shows up on a click on the home and every post-page?

    Thank you

Hey there @sweden1 – Twenty Twenty-Three is what’s called a “block theme.” Block themes use a newer system called Site Editing (formerly called Full Site Editing) for its setup, including menus. This is quite different than how “classic themes” are set up, so that’s why you’re not seeing any Customizer or WP Admin areas for widgets or menus. Block themes do not have widget areas – instead, you can add content that you want to appear in specific areas to the theme’s templates in the Site Editor. And to create menus, you’ll use the Navigation block.

If you’re new to Site Editing, I recommend you check out this collection of getting-started resources. It should help you get started!

If you need help with anything specific after having a look at that, just let me know.

One more thing I forgot to mention. You said you’re using a child theme – could you let me know a bit more about why you needed a child theme? With Site Editing, child themes tend to be less often necessary than they were in the past, since you can now make structural changes to your templates without needing to modify the theme files directly.

If you really do need a child theme because there’s something you’re unable to do with either the Site Editor or custom CSS, the Create Block theme plugin is the recommended way of creating your child theme, so that it retains all the necessary functionality. Feel free to check it out.

    Hi Kathryn,
That was a good explanation. Those are many useful comments and links. Thank you. I have just been entering info into a blog for 5 years and added php/js into child themes and plugins where needed. (One part is about including other files into posts using include statements in php.) But now I see the new way of site editing and possibly a Block Theme plugin. I will definitely go through your links and come back if needed. Topic solved.

You’re very welcome! Site Editing is definitely a new way of doing things, and takes some getting used to. Feel free to start another thread if you run into any other questions you need a hand with!
