How to assign categories to a portfolio item

    Hi, I am having difficulty understanding something in the admin side of WordPress with regards to my portfolio section. I can add new portfolio items and assign categories to each item. I have set up my categories with a parent category and sub categories. My question is, why when I add a new portfolio item do I have the option to select the category as well as the parent categories? If I just select the category what difference will it make without selecting the parent category as well?
