If you have made changes to theme files, they will be overwritten when the theme is updated. You’ll have to move those changes to a child theme or ask the developers of your commercial theme for help with it.

Do not do any updating until after you have made backups and have decided how to handle the matter of your theme. For backups, I pay a small fee to have my host do daily, weekly and monthly backups, and I also use FTP to occasionally save a complete backup of my domain on my local machine.

Your desire to update your theme makes me think you might be having problems with it. If that is true, or even if not, I would FTP-download your current theme and then also save a second copy of it locally, then activate Twenty Twelve at your site and completely replace your modified theme at your site with a new copy since an update might not replace all the files you have modified…and that could easily leave you eventually running a Child Theme of a modified theme that does not work as an updated theme actually should.
