How to Block Spam Comments

I have only just started using WordPress to design a site and am already getting plagued by spam comments advertising fake goods. The comments need to be moderated and agreed before they can be seen live, but it is already becoming a nuisance. Is there any way to either prevent, or at least minimise, this, other than restricting comments to registered users?
