I found a closed/resolved question about this as “how to change ?author=2 in email subscription wordpress” but the thread did not include the solution.

I have a similar issue: link in email returns a 404 but if you use the author nicename it works. I’d like it to go to the homepage or at least to the author page/archive.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi there,

Something must’ve changed the author URL in your site’s database and that’s outside the scope of support that we can provide since we do not have access to your database. To investigate that further, you’ll most likely need to have a developer or you’ll need to reach out to your site host to look into your database. They’d want to search specifically for the author link that isn’t working to find clues.

There are probably ways to work around this. One thing you could do outside reaching out to your host is to use a redirect plugin to send anyone who gets set to the author=17 page to the correct page for the author.

If you would prefer to have full control over the content of your subscription emails, it might be better to use a plugin like MailPoet: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wysija-newsletters/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Doesn’t help. The user in question: if you use the username (nicename) the appropriate page (archive) is displayed. If you use any valid user id as the number, it’s not found. I have this happening in many WordPress sites.

Perhaps it has to do with not using the plain permalink structure. But, who in their right mind would use that?

I would like to change the setting for the link — but that seems baked in with JetPack.

If I use a plugin, then my user would want is directed to home page.

?author=[ID] should absolutely work, it’s been in WordPress since the beginning.

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Twenty theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

If that’s still not working, I recommend asking over at https://www.ads-software.com/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/#new-topic-0
