• I see I can change the general text font family, but that doesn’t affect the headings, and there’s no font family setting under the Heading block.

  • Very strange but it looks like it’s only currently possible to manage font families for the Heading block via theme.json. I’d have expected this to be possible via the Typography panel for this block.

If you open up theme.json in the twentytwentytwo folder and go to the elements section starting from line 268, you’ll see each heading size has a fontFamily value set. Setting a new value for fontFamily will generate the required CSS.

Ya, this theme just isn’t ready for the public. I almost forgot: Never use themes built by WordPress! Thanks for the tip, though.

same problem exists for non-WP-developed themes. the message “make your site look exactly like you want” does not include “use the fonts you want”. unless you have the skills to hack themes.json etc

The whole point of going to block themes was to let users customize their sites without resorting to child themes. Yet, Twenty Twenty-Two doesn’t let you make the changes you want such as picking a font or easily changing the typography for H1, H2, H3, etc. The Typography settings you can change are sparse to the point of being meaningless.
For block themes to work, it would be help in the “Style” settings to show the overall design of the site’s typography, and let you change the H1, H2, H3, etc, text, lists, and links to your fonts and font sizes and weights and styles. It could all be done in one panel without hunting and pecking at the blocks that are used.

    A thousand times yes.

Thanks, Daniel Shaw (@chthnc), your advice has helped me a lot.
I wanted to change the headings’ “Serif” fonts into the “System” fonts only. FileZilla, and BBEdit have done its work on the theme.json instantly.
    Search: –wp–preset–font-family–source-serif-pro
    Replace: –wp–preset–font-family–system-font
    Replace All
    So easy

My guess is at some point, themes as we know them will go away completely and all facets of the site design will be manageable through the admin. Customizing typography is an enormously big undertaking which will take time.

Thanks. No wonder i couldn’t find it no matter what. The H1 of Twenty Twenty-two is so huge on my site.

Look forward to the further improvement of the theme.
