Want to change a menu item so that it links to a different file or an external URL. Hard to believe that this is not obvious and easy. ??
    Can anyone help please?
Do not want to create a new menu. ??
    Thank you ??

Appearance ->Menu. On the left, select “Custom Links”. This will let you create a custom link and drag it onto your menu.

If you don’t see that option, click “screen options” at the top right of that page and enable that option.

Thank you sterndata – and Mark!
Just to clarify, I want to change the link in an existing menu item rather than create a new menu item.
Example: The menu item “Red Article” links to a page with Article A.
You now wish the link to Article A to be changed to link to Article B or to a URL (to another site).

I would also like to be able to remove a link as in where the menu item is a main menu item with child pages (or sub menu items) but no link of its own.
So the outcome is: hovering over the main menu item reveals a dropdown menu of several items but the main menu item (at the top) is not linked to anything.

    Help is appreciated ??

A menu item must be a link, but to “remove” the link change it to # as that effectively changes it to a link to wherever you are.

    sterndata, Thanks.

If I could get access to the actual link to do what you said, I would have the answer to both my questions. ??

“A menu item must be a link, but to “remove” the link change it to # as that effectively changes it to a link to wherever you are. “

Would you be kind enough to give me a step by baby step on how to do this or give me a link to where it is explained in detail please? ??

Hard to believe that what appears to be the entirety of the WP documentation on menus does not say how to change a link ??

    Many thanks

Go to Appearance->Menus. Remove the menu item in question. Replace it with a new, “custom” link from the left. Use the same text as the menu label, but make the link just “#” (without the quotes)

Guys I’m having the same problem here. It’s insane.

Obviously removing the menu item is an option but it’s vastly easier to simply edit existing menu items (the reason being I have a bunch of custom code in there which I don’t want to retype).

The URL of a menu item used to be obvious and changeable. Now I just see the word “Original:” and the page title it links to. No option of any kind to simply change the URL, but I can edit everything else.

This is utterly baffling. See screenshot below. There is no way to edit “Original”.

Nick: Please do not “me too” on threads. Start new ones. Delete your menu item and add a new custom link.

Hi, I’m having the same issue, but after checking and all options and Googling the issue, I’m resigned to the fact that it’s not currently possible and will just have to delete the item and recreate it. ??

Steve: Respectfully, I think Nick was just helping explain the issue the OP is having, because your solution is to keep saying essentially “delete the menu item and create a new one”, and he said he doesn’t want to create a new menu item. I too am frustrated that I can’t simply edit the URL link on an already existing menu item. It seems to me that the answer is either “It can’t be done” (which I suspect) OR “Here’s how you do it…”

scotty… You can’t change the link for an existing, non-custom menu item. So I told him how to fix it. (Yes, it would be nice if you could.)

I’m closing this thread as it seems to be done.
