How to change the background image size ?

The slide background has the same size as your slider. You can change the size of your slider at Slider settings > Size: https://smartslider3.helpscoutdocs.com/article/59-slider-size

I was able to find this setting. However, when I change the width, it has no effect until the width gets close to height, then the height really gets big (without changing the height). what might I be doing wrong or could I try?

Content mode works that way that it can adjust the height of the slider based on the tallest slide. So if you have at least one slide with lots of content, that will increase the whole slider height and all slides inside.
So you should check your slides and make sure they have approximately the same amount of content (and white space created by paddings and margins).

This: “However, when I change the width, it has no effect until the width gets close to height” sounds like there’s a minimum/maximum slider size set at Slider settings > Size > under your responsive mode: https://smartslider3.helpscoutdocs.com/category/1178-slider-settings—size
Try lifting the limitation by setting the minimum height to 0 and the maximum height to some bigger number, like 3000.
