If you don’t have a unique IP, and your shared hosting IP is shared with 500 other websites, could you get banned just b/c they got banned?

The only way is to check each and every update service about twelve hours after you post, and see if they have received a recent ping for your blog, or if they are displaying the current post(s) from your blog.

As for the follow-up question, update services ban blogs based on URL, not IP, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

That’s what I’m asking how to do. How do I check on those sites for a ping? I don’t see a big “check for ping here” link.

Most things in life aren’t that easy. You will need to do some work.

With Technorati, search for your post titles and see if they come up in a search.

With IceRocket, search for your post titles and see if they come up in a search. If you find one, click the “Focus” link under the result to see all of the posts that IceRocket has indexed so far. IceRocket only indexes your blog after it has been pinged. So, if the ping is working, then IceRocket’s index of your posts should be up-to-date.

You can check Feedster via a similar method, but they use a large i image rather than a “Focus” link.

With Syndic8, search for your blog and click it’s feed ID. On your feed’s profile page, there is a “Pinged” field which displays when the last ping was received.

You will need to do some research to find out how to confirm your ping with the other services.

You know, it occurred to me that IF blog search engines do ban because of multiple pings, then anyone who edits an existing post is discriminated against. Better not fix that poor first draft!

The update services will only ban your blog if you ping multiple times consecutively within a short amount amount of time, usually no less than ten seconds and no more than one minute. Most bans rarely last any longer than twenty-four hours.

Could it be that my blog was being banned routinely when I was using the multiple ping servers? Now it doesn’t seem like it’s banned anymore.

Also, anyone know anything about ping servers and spam? I have a bazillion spam comments (ok a few per day) coming in on a handful of posts out of the hundred+ on each of my mature sites. In fact, when I reprinted the post across multiple sites, those same posts got a disproportionate share of the spam across all the sites.

Funny thing is I have comment moderation and also nofollow set so this shouldn’t be an issue, but it is. They just keep coming like kamikazes, bouncing off my blog’s hull, only to be followed by another wave of useless attack.

As you have noticed, there are a few ping services (weblogs.com in particular) which are monitored by spam bots. I recommend that you install a more concise anti-spam plugin, such as Bad Behavior, Akismet, or Spam Karma. You’ll be happier in the long run.

I wondered why I would always get an onslaught of spam each time I published a new entry to the blog…that clears that bit up.

My other question is with updating previous entries; how come WordPress pings when an entry is updated?

It would make sense as not to piss off the update services. If anyone has a link to the plugin that’s been mentioned above (the “smart update”) – I’d appreciate it.

I tend to edit entries and click on “Save” quite a bit before I think I get it right and I don’t want the ping servers to think I’m spamming.

Podz, when one “edits” an already published post, the button to commit changes is “save”. So now I’m confused!

klklaser – true. I asked about this in #wordpress because I do not believe that Edit does in fact ping. This is based on other blog’s feeds and when I know they have been edited – it is not a caching issue before someone chimes in with that.
I’ll ask on hackers.
