How to create custom items to be added to menus via Appearance > Custom Menus

  • Hi,

    I have been looking for a way to create custom items to be added to menu via the menu UI, not a custom URL in my menu.
    I have several ideas of function to be added in the menu and I don’t want to hard code their positions and parameters since it is not user-friendly.

    For example purpose, let’s say we want to ad a ‘news’ menu item that would automatically show de last five posts in the ‘informatics’ category of a blog.

    The target is:

    • This ‘new posts’ item should appear in the Appearance > Custom Menus interface,
    • The number of posts and taxonomies should be customisable in the same interface,
    • Eache post should appear as a drop down menu of the ‘news’ element, whatever his place in the menu.

    In (maybe) simpler therm, can we create and manage menu items the way we create and manage widget?

    The closest thing I found is this. But it is not satisfying since there is nos customisation possible.

    I hope I’m being clear since English is not my natural language.

  • Hello SIlvere – I think there might be some misunderstanding here. The menu interface is only to allow you to create menus that navigate to other places on the site. It is not an interface to create new pages. What you are saying is something that can easily be done within wordpress by just creating a new wordpress page template and having it call the latest 5 posts within the loop. You can then bring that page into the menu without it being hardcoded as it is a WP page. Does that make sense?

    Yes it does make sense. But it is NOT what I want to do.

    I do not want to create a new page and I DO want to navigate to other place on the site, so the menu interface seems to be the place for this.

    I juste want the menu to automatically change to display links to the last five posts.
