How To Create Referral Program Instead of Affiliate

I have the plugin set up for affiliates, but I realize my audience is more suited for referrals rather than an affiliate program. I understand that the plugin can be set up for either affiliates or referrals, but I can’t seem to find any instructions.

My goal:
I want to start with placing a CTA in my email campaign offering a free book for referring a friend to buy a product from me, with the friend getting a discount.

What I have so far:
I have the CTA designed. I also have a WooCommerce coupon created for offering the 100% and partial discounts, for the referrer and the referee, respectively.
And I have a CTA for the referred friend to click in order to get their discount.

What I need help with:
Instructions for setting up the architecture for the procedure, i.e. where do I point the CTA? (Do I send them to the affiliate plugin landing page? – It seems like a total disconnect to offer them a free book but then send them to an affiliate signup page.) And how do I deliver their reward only after they have referred someone – is it just using the affiliate link that pays when a sale is completed by the referral? Where do I put the affiliate link?

I am looking for step-by-step instructions.
